Auto Biography
By Laraine Rose
I've always been nuts about cars. Little wonder, I was raised the only daughter with 5 brothers. My brothers always had at least one car/truck up on blocks and so I guess it was just natural that I became a grease monkey. I ruined more clothes than my 5 brothers put together and mom was sure that I'd never settle down to being a lady and the more domestic pleasures of a woman. Well, I did but my heart still beats faster when I see the sleek new car models. Will and I were checking out the cars at the dealerships today as it is about time we upgrade to a newer auto. Our Toyota has never given us any trouble but with the recent difficulties Toyota has been having resulting in many recalls, it has us wondering if, perhaps, we should look for a different kind of car. Aaaah, the ... Infiniti 2010 G37 convertible! It is an expression of an engine with a powerful soul. A triumph of design and purpose. It's graceful lines are designed to turn heads. Now, there is the car for me! I want to buy THAT one. Of course, it's red. "Wait a minute," Will says. "There are a few things we should check out before we buy!" "Why?" I ask. "I know cars and, I want THAT one!" Well, as always happens, Will made me come down to earth, deflating my balloon faster than a sharp pin prick. He started talking about pricing of key features such as Downshift Rev Matching, Close-ratio 6-speed manual with short-throw shifter, 4 piston opposed front and 2-piston opposed rear sport brake calipers, 14.0-inch front/13.8-inch rear vented discs with 4-wheel, 4-channel ABS etc., etc. Well, he lost me back at the "Downshift" part. I was impressed but just wanted to get down to the unique sport front, wheat leather interior, silk Obi aluminum trim and the front sport heated seats with manual thigh extension and driver's power torso and thigh support adjustment. After all, I knew what to look for in a car! (Yah right!) Well, I may not know much about the new cars (everything has changed so much since I was a junior mechanic, "Ahem") but, one thing I do know is: if you are looking to buy a second-hand car there are certain precautions to take. Here is one suggestion I think is a good one. Don't buy a car until you read it's Auto Biography Make an informed decision with an online vehicle history report. CARPROOF is a Canadian company for cars sold in Canada. If you are buying a used vehicle, CarProof can provide you with a Vehicle History Report. A vehicle history report can tell you a lot about the car you’re thinking of buying, such as whether it has: ~ had a damage claim (if records are available), ~ been stolen, ~ any liens on it (only available on CarProof reports). Two kinds of reports are available: ~ICBC Vehicle Claims History – based on ICBC claims data. Shows whether a vehicle has had any damage claims with ICBC. Also indicates the vehicle’s status (source: B.C. vehicle registry) and whether it’s been imported to B.C. ($20 plus GST) ~CarProof Verified BC – a more detailed report from CarProof, a used-vehicle reporting service. It includes ICBC claims, plus information from insurers and vehicle databases across Canada and the U.S. ($59.95 plus GST) Before you buy, consider getting a vehicle history report. The small up-front investment could help you choose the right vehicle – and steer clear of a bad deal.

Thanks for supplying this information, Bill. I thought that probably there was a similar program in the U.S.A. but couldn't find the name. Thanks again.
Great intel. Bill stole my thunder about Car Fax... Ya gotta do stuff like this.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Yes, certainly. It does save us from a lot of bad deals.
I had never heard of this before, sounds like a fantastic resource. (and, yes, I don't blame you for wanting that car... I would like one myself)

I'm not sure if I can convince Will. He is much more informed than I am now about the inward workings of a car. I tend to get carried away with the gadgets and looks. I guess mom's dreams came true and I became a lady.
I liked to get under the hood of my car too when I was a teenage "tomboy" girl. But you are right, the modern cars are much more complicated and require a lot more specialized equipment to maintain. I drive a conservative car now, but still like to look at the fancier ones.

It's nice to meet a kindred spirit. I would be interested to know how you got interested in cars.
Thanks for the cautionary notes.

Welcome!
Many years ago,I sold new and used cars and trucks. Back then, you had a lot of local dealers, with local salespeople, who sold to their friends and families. Today, the emphasis is on mega dealers and the same degree of trust isn't there. Thank you for sharing this information, Loraine. Best wishes. Frederick

That's so true, Frederick. Fortunately, we have a local dealership here that we know and do trust. Being a small city, they need to have our trust to stay in business. Thank you so much for your comment. Best Wishes, Laraine
