AUTOMOTIVE X PRIZE - Cars of The Future
By Laraine Rose
The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, an international competition that pits some of the world’s most fuel efficient vehicles against one another in a quest to win their share of a $10 million prize purse, celebrated the start of on-track competition events at a public ceremony at Michigan’s state capitol in Lansing. Together with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the event showcased several of the competing vehicles alongside Michigan officials and notable auto industry, business, and government leaders and representatives. Speakers were: • Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, Chairman and CEO, The X PRIZE Foundation • Greg Main, President and CEO, Michigan Economic Development Center (MEDC) • Roger Curtis, President, Michigan International Speedway (MIS) • Connie Bezanson, Technology Manager – Office of Vehicle Technologies, U. S. Department of Energy • Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm Competing teams from the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE who were on-site included: • amp (Blue Ash, OH) • Commuter Cars (Spokane, WA) • Edison2 (Lynchburg, VA) • ZAP (Santa Rosa, CA) ABOUT THE PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE AUTOMOTIVE X PRIZE The goal of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE is to inspire a new generation of viable, super fuel-efficient vehicles that offer more consumer choices. Ten million dollars in prizes will be awarded to the teams that win a stage competition for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 Miles per gallon or energy equivalent (MPGe). The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE will place a major focus on efficiency, safety, affordability, and the environment. It is about developing real, production-capable cars that consumers will want to buy, not science projects or concept cars. This progress is needed because today's oil consumption is unsustainable and because automotive emissions significantly contribute to global warming and climate change. Mission accomplished: President & Vice Chair of the X PRIZE Foundation, Robert K. Weis announced the winner of the X PRIZE. The $10 million was awarded to three teams who proved their entry vehicle to meet the competition's strictest requirements, including the ability to reach 100 miles per hour energy equivilent (MPGE) and to survive gruelling, safety, efficiency, emissions, durability and range tests. These amazing innovators worked for over two years to excelorate the future of the automotive industry. It's certainly a worthwhile goal and the prize is not peanuts. I wish them success.

I just hope that the dealerships can keep the prices down so that everyone has a chance to purchase them.
Will the new cars also include a price gun allowing you to name your own price for buying one of these new cars? Will Stephanie Courtney be the person awarding the prize?

As Flo no doubt!!! ;) "The way I play her, she's pretty much the most asexual thing on TV right now. I think the Geico lizard puts out more sexual vibes than Flo does. But I do think the cavemen are totally crushable." - Stephanie Courtney
Thank you for sharing this valuable information, Laraine. The external links are excellent and add to the over-all quality of your intel. Best wishes. Frederick

Thanks, I have a Squidoo lens about cars of the future so this will be added to that now. All the best, Laraine
Awesome! I like the goal of making the cars with actual end users in mind instead of pie in the sky.

That's the plan. I hope that it ends up that way.
