Special Days for Special Moms Everywhere

By Laraine Rose

"M" is FOR THE MANY WAYS SHE'S BEEN THERE FOR YOU.

While sometimes seen as a holiday manufactured by greeting card companies and florists, this is not so. The tradition of celebrating Mother's Day can be traced back in history to long ago. The Greeks, Egyptians and Romans celebrated Mother's Day by honoring maternal deities or goddesses.

Our modern Mother's Day was started by Anna Jarvis in 1907, as a result of a graveside promise to her own mother that she'd continue her dream of seeing motherhood recognized. Unfortunately, Jarvis became overly concerned by the commercialization of the holiday and fought hard to see it return to its simpler roots.

And as any mom will tell you, it's the simple, occasionally goofy gifts that they receive from their kids that they cherish the most. Some of the most memorable gifts fall into two categories:

Kitsch: Mom memory boxes are filled with amazing trinkets and keepsakes. Snow globes, ceramic soap holders shaped like dragon–dogs, or coffee mugs in every shape and colour. All these incredible gifts show that your little person thinks you're uniquely special.

Coupons: These typically come in two varieties; things you already receive (hugs, kisses); and things you'll ultimately have to help them with (breakfast, mowing the lawn). However, when the coupons are tucked in lovingly made cards decorated with glued–on fussilli they're extra special.

The Internet can help you quickly find the perfect gift online from great sites like amazon.ca, or flowers from bloomex.ca.

Or why not pop some popcorn, get some treats and have a movie night with mom.

Of course what mom's really want, is to hear from you. Home phone service offers a great, affordable way to stay in touch with your mom on Mother's Day and all the other days when you just want to say hi.

Why Mother's Should Be Honored
The Challenges Mothers Face

“It is the tasks connected with the home that are the fundamental tasks of humanity. . . . If the mother does not do her duty, there will either be no next generation, or a next generation that is worse than none at all.”
- Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States.

CLEARLY, a mother is essential to human life, but her role involves far more than just bearing children. Regarding the role of mothers in most parts of the world today, one writer observed: “She is the primary protector for each child’s health, education, intellect, personality, character, and emotional stability.”

One of a mother’s many important functions is that of educator of her children. A child’s first words and its pattern of speech are usually learned from its mother. Thus, a person’s first language is often referred to as his mother tongue. The mother generally spends more time with the children each day than her mate, so she may be their chief teacher as well as principal disciplinarian. Thus, the Mexican proverb “Education is breast-fed” honors the important role of mothers.

Perhaps we should make every day Mother's Day.

Contributor's Note

DID YOU KNOW?
The title of "supermom" has to go to a Russian peasant from Shuya, a village 250 kms east of Moscow. From 1725 to 1765 she is reported to have given birth to 69 children including 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets.

I received a wonderful Mother's Day card from my friend's
s two year old grandson. He had tastefully scribbled over the card with an orange crayon. It's a keeper!

It's probably something you will cherish always. I used to babysit my sister-in-laws twin daughters when they were young. Now they both have children of their own and I show them the art work that their moms made for me. They enjoy that!

Thank you for sharing these wonderful facts about Mother's Day, Loraine. We keep the thank you notes and cards from the grandchildren, as we did for the children. It's great to share these with them as time goes on and to see how their art has grown.
Best wishes.
Frederick

Thanks for your comment Frederick .. you are always welcome.

Someone told me that they keep only the best artwork that their children did. I never did this because as you say, it is interesting to see how their abilities grow. OR NOT! :)

Thanks for the historical background on mom's day. Indeed I have many treasured boxes of kids stuff from 3 grown children and 3 grandsons with another grandchild on the way... what fun! :)

We get double enjoyment from these treasures. Once when they are presented to us and again when we pull them out to relive the moment. Thank you for visiting me here and leaving a comment.
